Q) What would you be looking at today if you were an independent entrepreneur?
A) Something dramatic like artificial intelligence. Biology. Energy.
For AI, biology, and energy, I would suggest investing in SIAI, SENS, and thorium respectively.

1) Sematic amalysis sufficient to provide good translation of natural languages, precision searching and contextural VoIP. Other AI inventions would follow.
2) A Von Neumann machine or self replicatring robot. A structure in space would provide all our energy needs.
