Google and AGI

Does Google's tech staff have the rationality and vision to understand the huge importance of Artificial General Intelligence to humanity's future, and realize that the issue requires attention now rather than later?

Maybe yes, maybe no, but it looks like we'll soon find out, as Ben Goertzel of the Singularity Institute will be giving a talk there. On the AGI list, Ben writes:

FYI, I am scheduled to give a talk to Google's tech staff on AGI and Novamente, later in the month...

-- Ben

With Google's Director of Search Quality, a pioneer in AI himself - Peter Norvig - making an appearance at the upcoming Singularity Summit II, it looks as if SIAI and Google are starting to form some sort of relationship. It'll be interesting to see where this goes!

See here for an earlier post of mine on the Google's rumored push towards AGI and my opinion on it.

  1. There’s an obvious incentive for a company like Google to want to develop smarter search technology, and there may be some common ground between AGI research and programmers working on better search engines. The ability to analyse and understand the meaning of text and graphics is obviously a common goal.

If the Novamente project could get some funding or programming support from Google in return for improved semantic search analysis abilities that would certainly be a good thing.

  2. I’d love to hear Eliezer pitch SIAI’s line to the google crowd…

  3. This is fantastic news! I’m really excited to hear that both Ben and Eliezer will be speaking there.

  4. The race will begin, as I see. Google with Goertzel (and SIAI?) are just one horse. Still, ten years or so to the Result, I think.

    The game is on.

  5. Sometimes reading these types of ‘big-event’ articles makes me feel like I’m in some sort of movie. Maybe I’ll have a reason for all this serious-sounding techno music now.

  6. This is truly awesome.

Singinst only recently moved up to medium size.

Now they’re already trying to get Google to hop on the bandwagon.

Let’s hope that Google’s brains as well as their resources will be of use to our common goal of the big S.

Can’t wait to see the vids.

  7. Maybe I’ll have a reason for all this serious-sounding techno music now.

    I can identify with this

  8. Jeeblers. No, I haven’t scheduled a Google Tech talk (though at least one Googler has suggested that I ought to). How do these rumors get started?

My master plan is to send Norvig my list of errata for Artificial Intelligence: A Modern Approach, which seems like a good conversation starter, and see where things go from there.

  9. Now that Eliezer Yudkowsky has commented here, I’ll never wash this post again.

  10. Hello, I found your website by Google search engine. figured I should take a look around. I would read your site frequently. Look forward to checking out your some of your posts again.
