I have to admit, I really like the idea. I don’t think the actual material will wind up netting much, if any money once shipping is taken into consideration. However, it did make me feel a bit on the guilty side for not donating anything when this guy is willing to go that far. And, in the end, that’s exactly what good marketing is.

If you’re just interested in selling stuff for quick cash, just go to your nearest iSOLD It (www.i-soldit.com).

Maybe Thiel will buy it anonymously. I guess it’d be a tad questionable if he has a wife of that ’sort’.

“Maybe Thiel will buy it anonymously. I guess it’d be a tad questionable if he has a wife of that ’sort’.”
I’ve thought more than once about who is really behind the large anonymous donations to SIAI. Peter Thiel does have a great deal of experience moving money around.

Sounds like SIAI is getting a lot more publicity and perhaps even turning into something that ordinary people put their hearts and minds into.
I remember discovering the old website a few years ago - you know the one with the human hand and a “digital” hand shaking hands? I realized that I had found a real gem - something that was valuable but also hard to find. Things have changed.
A few days ago I saw a woman standing outside my local supermarket in the rain, collecting money for some animal welfare charity. I thought to myself: “people have got their priorities wrong; they want something to believe in, some good cause to dedicate themselves to, but they choose something totally irrelevant like this instead of something crucial like SIAI”
There is a need to win hearts and minds, although with the various “yuck” factors around its going to be an uphill struggle.

I’m not entirely convinced that trying to profit by having people donate old porn videos is going to win “hearts and minds” for SIAI or raise very much money in the process. Fund raising of this kind may send out the wrong message, making it look as if SIAI is not really a serious organisation. It would only take one or two incidents of people sending in pirated or otherwise illegal videos, and for SIAI to be seen to be profiting from that, for reputations and credibility to be harmed.

I agree Bob, I always wondered when the meme would spread enough to reach these ‘characters’, myself.
