WTA Launches $25K Matching Grant Challenge Thursday, Dec 13 2007
transhumanism 1:33 pm
The World Transhumanist Association (WTA) is having a fundraising drive. If you can afford it, pitch in! Here’s the letter from the new Executive Director of the WTA, James Clement:
Dear Fellow Transhumanist,
Be a part of Transhumanist history!
Bill Faloon of Life Extension Foundation and Brian Cartmell of Cartmell Holdings, LLC, have generously offered to help us kick off our first fundraising event by matching your donations up to $25,000 until January 31, 2008.
We need 250 members to give $100 each, so your donations can be doubled. This is a unique opportunity we cannot afford to miss!
This money will fund three projects necessary for the WTA’s survival against a well-funded, organized, and vocal opposition. We intend to spread our memes through:
1) H+ Quarterly Digital Magazine
Featuring stories, interviews, news, and an events calendar, to be edited by the visionary journalist R.U. Sirius. It will be a fresh, fun and powerful medium for presenting all of our ideas to our membership and the general public.
2) Website Redesign, Logo and Branding
A desperately needed “extreme makeover” to get our ideas out there!
3) Student Outreach Road Show
Organize a one-day event at a top university to trial-run this concept, for educational exploration and membership growth.
Through members’ generous efforts, we will be offering a special H+ T-shirt for each $100 donation, and autographed copies of Citizen Cyborg, Ending Aging, or The Singularity is Near for $250 donations.
I know that this time of year you receive many requests for donations. But this is the first time the WTA has asked for this kind of support from our members. We need you now. Please help.
To make these projects a reality, make your secure donation at our website, www.transhumanism.org/match.
You may also send a check to WTA, PO Box 128, Willington, CT 06279.
The World Transhumanist Association is a 501(c)(3) organization and your contribution will be tax- deductible to the extent allowed by law.
Help Transhumanism grow.
Sincerely,
James Clement
Executive Director
World Transhumanist Association
P.S. Please forward this to your family, friends and like-minded associates. We need their help, too!

There is absolutely no sense in giving any serious thought to transhumanism or the singularity. Peak oil:
http://www.lifeaftertheoilcrash.net/
is coming by the end of this decade (if it hasn’t already happened). What’s going to power your computers so you can get to the singularity?
Also, food availability will greatly reduce a few years after peak oil: http://www.lifeaftertheoilcrash.net/Archives2007/HeinbergFiftyMillion.html
so what will you transhumans eat? Air?

You know, there are non-fossil sources of energy, like the big hot thing in the sky (where do you think the energy in oil came from?)

Nobody is denying that the problems with fossil fuels are multitude, but there does seem to be a strange sort of doomsday cult which has, on the internet at least, arisen around the idea of ‘peak oil.’
“Don’t worry.
Don’t bother, there’s no point.
It’s all moot anyways.” they say. All other considerations are trivial. The end times are near.
Disasturbation is as pointless as masturbation. While trying to be as inoffensive as possible, I find it hard not to say that if you haven’t got a solution and you’re not providing an analysis, stop wasting your own and other people’s time. In a twist on the turn of phrase, “Don’t get religion, get even.”
Religion doesn’t solve anything. Here is a group soliciting donations to help affect what they believe to be a truly worthwhile cause and all I see are people like this fellow constantly attempting to hijack discussions in favour of their particular vision of “The Undeniable Truth of The Matter.” Do something useful - make a bloody donation.:-P

R.U. Sirius? Are you serious?

I remember reading articles saying that in year 2000 we would have already run out of petroleum.
Nothing has happened. Although it is a very good idea to start using other sources of energy.

It’s nice to see why people donates to the WTA:
_____________
Because I want the quickest route possible to the Singularity.
Because life’s too short.
Because transhumanism is the most important idea of the 21st century
For a better tomorrow
Because it is obvious that humanity need to expand and become better in every way! I love it all so much!
I don’t have much money as I’m a student, but I donated because the transhumanist message really needs to be spread. If Iâm still around in 50 years, Iâm sure Iâll feel it was a worthwhile inves
Transhumanism celebrates life, religions hope for death.
I am interested in the use of technology for the reduction of human suffering in the world, to increase our ability & choice, and because technology will hasten our next evolutionary step(s).
I want a better future for all.
Version 0.1 is just the beginning.
I want safe human enhancement technologies to be available to everyone.
________
I agree with all them. I think this is just the begining.
Extending lifespan and saving lives is our #1 priority. We need the WTA to spread our the possibilities of technology to make people much more interested in them, so in this way as more people involves in their development, we accelerate at a faster rate making as possible to save more lives.

> I hope Michael isn’t dead.
Wow. You really posted that. It’s not cute. It’s not funny. It’s not “Hey, lighten up.” Are you just ignorant? If not, do us a favor and remove your comment. I can then remove this one.
It’s my understanding that Michael is taking a break from the internet for a while. He may be working on his book. He may be spending a lot of time with his girlfriend and friends. Regardless, I think he has earned the right to not have idiots on his blog saying “I hope Michael isn’t dead.”

It seems posts cannot be removed. Wonderful.
