Is it stated anywhere why they went with this design over a traditional wheel model or treads? This has to be an economical design choice and I am curious what it might be…

The most recent trend in logging designs has been “zero impact” goal machine design. Treads and wheels leave far more effective ‘footprint’ than does a “foot” device.
@iconrad no, you are wrong - it has been funded by .fi govt funds for high-techs from 2000, as it had some potential military applications (where having wheels or treads might cost a life someone) apart from green footprint. it had been sold in 2002 to John Deer as Finnish subsidiary.
