Tim Tyler on the Risks of Caution Sunday, Dec 20 2009
AI and friendly ai and risks and videos 3:08 pm
H/t to Joshua Fox for the link.
I have been watching some of Tim’s videos over the last few months, but I definitely haven’t seen them all. This one is nice because it summarizes a poignant feeling of concern.
In this video, he builds a model of AGI development using construction paper and Post-It notes.

It seems to me that Tyler’s greatest problem is that he refuses to put enough credence on the possibility that we are in a no-win situation.

I am too optimistic?
If we are inevitably screwed, then it doesn’t matter much what we do. “Inevitable” things are often not very interesting - the things to concentrate on are the areas where your actions can make a difference.
Eleizer Yudkowsky apparently thinks there is something we can do:
“I think that sad endings are possible, but not inevitable. I think we can find a happy beginning, if we know exactly what we’re doing.”

I figure we can probably find something useful to be doing as well. If you really want to throw up your hands in despair, don’t let me stop you - but I am inclined to doubt whether your case is good enough to convince very many others.

Thanks for the mention, Michael. That was my SS2009 response video.
I am certainly a concerned party - though my concerns are not always on quite the same scale as yours.

Tim, I just love your videos. You have a knack for cutting through the noise. Keep it up.
