Foresight 2010: the Synergy of Molecular Manufacturing and AGI Thursday, Jan 14 2010

I will be speaking at Foresight 2010 this weekend in Palo Alto. My presentation, “Don’t Fear the Singularity, but Be Careful: Friendly AI Design” will be both exciting and awesome. You can register here.
If you can’t make it out to Palo Alto, the whole thing will be streamed live by TechZulu, which did the same for the recent H+ Summit. Here is their Alexa data for reference.
Hod Lipson of “computer program self-discovers the laws of physics” fame will be there, along with familiar faces and names such as Rob Freitas, Ralph Merkle, Robin Hanson, Paul Saffo, David Friedman, Brian Wang, and Monica Anderson. Salim Ismail, Executive Director of Singularity University, will speak late on Sunday.

“Don’t Fear the Singularity”.
Does that mean you really don’t fear the Singularity?
Because I remember you were a little fearful of it in the past years.
(and rightfully so, don’t be ashamed)

No, I’m just trying to say that the chance of it going bad is less than 100%. Some people seem to believe that every possible mind is self-centered and will eventually eliminate us when it gets smart enough, something I want to argue against.

I can understand that.
I would say that the amount of self centered brains is equal to the amount of evil brains and the amount of good brains.
These three are only fractions in the complete mind space.
When pushing forward hastily with AI, the chance of creating an AI that’s completely indifferent to us is far, far greater.

Hi, I missed the webcast and didn’t find a way to view an archive.
Can you post a link here? (assuming there is one)
Thanks

Seconding Pring: live is all well and good, but recorded is so much more convenient!

Supposedly the videos will be online later, but speaking from experience it takes time to make that happen. I would allow them a few weeks.

The fear is not about “all” minds biological or otherwise. It’s about just one very powerful mind (that goes out of control), that does not mind to take atoms from your body, when it needs.
