What are Your Political Views?

I thought it would be fun to write up some poll questions and see the answers. These answers reflect what I hear all the time. They aren’t strawmen because I’ve heard people who sincerely espouse them all.

There are no points or score of anything like that, because this is too complex to fit on a linear scale. Just write down your answers, list them in the comments, and waste a bunch of time arguing about them.

Here we go.

1) The military is…

A) Necessary to defend our country, but much larger than it needs to be. Its funding should be cut by 10-30% to help fund health care, infrastructure, and programs for the needy.

B)  Essential. The world is a dangerous place, and we need a large military to assert our interests globally. Funding should be kept roughly where it is, though it would be nice if there were less waste and more efficiency. Maybe the military should even be a little larger than it is now.

C) An overblown military-industrial complex perpetuated by bloodthirsty hawks, killer of women and children, provoking the entire world to rebel against our imperialist designs. Say no to War, say no to Imperialism.

D) Too large, and indicative of the runaway expansionary policies of big government. The military should be cut, just like every other sector of government.

E)  Uhhh… I think that we should really consider… (waffling, bringing up complex tangential points, hyper-analysis and hesitation that doesn’t amount to a concrete answer.)

F) I don’t know.

2) The best way to deal with the economy is…

A) To put the bankers in jail, where they belong, let banks fail, and give the people their due share. We need to tax and regulate out-of-control corporations so that the ultra-rich don’t exploit us. The People are tired of being kicked around by the ultra-wealthy.

B) Carefully manage the economy by lowering interest rates and increasing the money supply to stimulate growth.

C) Stop lowering interest rates, let the market do its thing, and get the government’s grubby hands out of the economy. And oh, we obviously need to go back to the gold standard. Impose “austerity” (they used to call it “economy”) to lower our debt, which is unsustainable.

D) Keep an eye on the economy, don’t artificially lower interest rates, regulate corporations with a light hand if need be, neither let the free market have total free rein nor print money like it’s going out of style. Impose some degree of austerity to lower our public debt, which is unsustainable.

E) None of these answers describe me. My real answer is special and very lengthy, but doesn’t make any concrete policy suggestions. Basically, I don’t know anything about economics but want to sound smart.

F) I’m not an economist, and I admit I don’t know much about economics. Next question.

3) Democracy…

A)  Is dominated by corrupt politicians. These scumbags are controlled by lobbyists and the elite. Their choices don’t reflect the common good. “Democracy” in America is not very democratic at all. The people need our say, and we aren’t getting it. Get rid of these clowns and replace them with direct democracy.

B) Is more or less fine as it is. It’s not perfect, and I have some quibbles with it, but by and large the system works, as it has for hundreds of years.

C)  Is a wonderful thing. We should appreciate the benefits of democracy, enjoy how free our country is, and stop taking democracy for granted.

D) Is dominated by the rich and powerful and is therefore unjust. We need a strong leader who really cares about the People and does what it takes to ensure that the plutocracy stops exploiting the working class, even if it means suspending democratic processes for the good of the proletariat.

E) Threatens freedom. We need to place a priority on freedom and not so much on mob rule. Popular rule often compromises individual freedoms. Government needs to be much smaller, to let us live in peace, and observe the non-aggression principle. We also need much lower taxes.

F) Was a terrible idea from the start. The whole thing should be thrown into the wood chipper.

G) No idea.

4) Equality…

A)  Is the bedrock on which our nation was built. Social justice should be our major priority. All people are created equal. I particularly think we should be concerned about equal rights for minorities, women, the disabled, transgendered, and other oppressed groups. The world the way it is now is just plain unfair.

B) Should be maintained under the law, but we shouldn’t get too carried away. I believe in equality of opportunity, but not in social engineering everyone to be perfectly equal at all times. Redistributing too much wealth would just turn us into Communists, but I think that the rich can afford to fork over enough cash for some basic services like health care.

C)  What is this equality you speak of?

D) This poll seems so serious. I would rather make a funny joke to lighten the mood. Why are you so obsessed with all this stuff?

5) Drones…

A) Are pretty handy for blowing up terrorists. Terrorists go boom.

B) Demonstrate how our freedoms are being compromised by leaders with no checks on their power. You could be next.

C) Seem like a useful tool for surveillance and precision strikes, but we need to carefully introduce legislation to ensure that these technologies aren’t abused in the future.

D) I don’t care.

6) Firearms…

A) Are lawful and should not be restricted.

B) Are used to kill dozens of people in blood-soaked shooting sprees. We need to introduce new gun legislation that puts restrictions on high-capacity magazines and assault rifles. Assault rifles have no reasonable use in hunting. It doesn’t take an AK-47 to take down a deer.

C) Can be dangerous, but due to the 2nd Amendment, we shouldn’t regulate them too harshly. Instead of focusing on the guns themselves, we need to be a more responsible society and reach out to people who seem disturbed.

D) Don’t care.

7) Immigration…

A) Contributes valuable diversity and human capital to our country. Everyone has the right to be here. The right to choose where you live is a fundamental human right.

B) Is necessary because there are so many jobs Americans won’t do. Who is going to work in the fields, if we don’t have immigrants?

C) Is destroying our culture.

D) Is too contentious. I don’t have an opinion.

8) Marijuana…

A) Is good for getting you high. Rolling technique is important.

B) I’m alright with it, but don’t usually smoke.

C) Is a drug that turns people into lazy slobs.

D) Is a dangerous drug and needs to remain illegal.

E) I’ve never seen a marijuana before.

9) Gays…

A) Deserve the same rights as everyone else, including the right to marry and to adopt.

B) Should not be married. Marriage is between a man and a woman.

C) Why does the government have the authority to grant marriage licenses, again?

D) It makes no difference to me.

10) The death penalty…

A) Is barbaric and should be banned.

B) Costs too much to carry out, and should be suspended for that reason.

C) Is a necessary deterrent. It can be expensive, but it’s worth it.

D) We need to remove the barriers that make it so expensive for the state to execute the worst criminals. Let ‘em fry.

E) I’m not sure.

11) “Human biodiversity”…

A) Never heard of it.

B) Is a code-word for racism.

C) Is a fact. Different ethnicities have different relative qualities, and varying averages make an aggregate difference.

D) The idea makes me uncomfortable.

12) Evolutionary psychology…

A) Don’t know much about it.

B) Makes some good points, but there’s a lot more to people than evpsych just-so stories. Look deeper.

C) Determines the primary contours of our psychology, and the rest of just icing on the cake.

D) More research is needed before we can say anything conclusive.

13) Authority and hierarchy…

A) Is a way for a bunch of old white men to masturbate in the mirror.

B) Has its place, especially in the workplace, but it shouldn’t be omnipresent in society. Many bosses are assholes.

C) Is the foundation on which a healthy society should be built.

D) No opinion.

14) IQ…

A) Is a meaningless measure. It only measures how well you can do on IQ tests, and that’s it.

B) Probably matters somewhat, but it makes me uncomfortable to think about.

C) Exists, and makes a huge difference in all areas of life.

D) I don’t know.

15) Government…

A) Should stay out of society’s business. Freedom is the most important.

B) Should stay out of our private lives, but provide a social safety net.

C) Done well, can lead a country to greatness.

D) I’m not sure.

1): A or D, depending more on the specifics of the social spending. More money to health care, no.
    2) D
    3) B. Empirical evidence here is overwhelming, both in cross-section and time series.
    4) B

    6) B, although it doesn’t matter as much as people think
    7) None of the above.

Michael, I hope you work up some statistics on these answers.

  5. 1) The military: Somewhere between A and C. We spend too much on the military, and much of US foreign policy IS actively harmful, but I’d be cautious about dialing down our presence in the Korean peninsula.

    2) The economy: I think B would have the most immediate positive effects but could go for a bit of A as well.

    3) Democracy: Winston Churchill.

This is the hardest question to answer. If I had to pick letters, I’d say a mix of A, B, and C but that’s even less satisfying than in some of these other cases.

    4) Equality: A or B–I’m unclear what the substantiative disagreement between them is, though neither is quite how I’d say it.

    5) Drones: B

    6) Firearms: B

    7) Immigration: Ideally A, maybe with some concessions to practicality

    8) Marijuana: B

    9) Gays: A, open to C if we could come up with a good plan for an alternative to the current legal framework for marriage.

    10) The death penalty: A

    11) “Human biodiversity”: B

    12) Evolutionary psychology: Steven Pinker. B and C are caricatures of the true view in different directions.

    13) Authority and hierarchy: B

    14) IQ: C or Malcolm Gladwell or something. It’s not meaningless and I’m not uncomfortable with it, but I’m not so sure of the specifics.

    15) Government: Matt Yglesias. Sort of B, but not really.

I’ll take all of the “I’m a special snowflake” options. My attitude to politics is that liberal democracy would be basically okay if the Right weren’t right on HBD, but that none of it matters anymore. Yes, if technology weren’t to advance much over the next century, we would be witness to the death of western civilization. Instead, technology will wrench history off its course. Demography is no longer destiny. Embryo screening for intelligence, a robotic labor force, rejuvenation therapies that end death from aging, infinite everything from nanofactories, terrible new weapons wreaking havoc on humanity, and the recursively self-improving artificial intelligence that kills us all. Next to that – or any of the other technologies which could emerge sooner and prove decisive instead – Mexican immigration doesn’t amount to a hill of beans. None of our existing institutions or social structures are prepared for what’s coming and the century will be a rollercoaster ride on fire.

    CFBBDCCECACCBCB. But it doesn’t matter.

  12. 1) The military is…
Currently (mostly) run by sociopaths, like every other area of government, now that the meaningful limits on government power have been successfully circumvented (to about 90% efficiency –the last 10% is the real killer). Interestingly, the military also contains a lot of libertarians, who are Pat Tillman types. I’ve encountered them in almost every state with a large military presence, while petitioning to place the Libertarian Party on the ballot. My answer is between “C” and “D” below.

    2) The best way to deal with the economy is…
    C) Stop lowering interest rates, let the market do its thing, and get the government’s grubby hands out of the economy. And oh, we obviously need to go back to the gold standard. Impose “austerity” (they used to call it “economy”) to lower our debt, which is unsustainable.

    3) Democracy…
Is something Michael Anissimov seemingly doesn’t know much about. Greek Democracy =/= suffrage alone. The Jury is by far the more important of the two threshold-based institutions necessary for proper “Democracy.” Also, Democracy is essential to the functioning of a Republic. Without both of the primary democratic institutions properly functioning, as per the institutional memory of “common law,” there can be no Democracy. The people discussing democracy generally have zero conception of what it means, or a shoddy “government school” misconception of it. This seems to be the case here. …Start reading about the levellers, Mike. (Some of the things said below are true, and many of them are not mutually-exclusive of elements in the other answers. I included the letters below to let you know which options I was closest to portions of.) My answer is: We should reinstate proper democracy, which is not mutually exclusive to reinstating a proper republic. A republic is a more specialized instance of a proper democracy. “We” (the sociopaths who seek government positions) have eliminated the republic and are at work eliminating the remnants of democracy. When that happens, there will be democide.

    E) Threatens freedom. We need to place a priority on freedom and not so much on mob rule. Popular rule often compromises individual freedoms. Government needs to be much smaller, to let us live in peace, and observe the non-aggression principle. We also need much lower taxes. (Popular rule doesn’t compromise individual freedoms, unless the Jury structure has been grotesquely infringed upon, which it has. To undo the damage to the jury would be to undo the damage to democracy, at this point. In a few years, the damage may be irreversible, and the mass-murdering may then begin, as the sociopaths run out of options their mirror-neuron deficient brains can comprehend.)

    4) Equality…
What kind of dipshit answers are you giving us? Did you learn nothing about politics after a crummy government school education? There are two most basic positions to this question:
    A) “Equality of Outcome” is important and should be imperative, even if the only way to obtain it is coercion. (Socialist, mislabeled as “liberal”)
    B) “Equality of Outcome” is important, and we should be concerned with it, as a guide to how healthy our society is doing, but it should never be coerced. It’s a good idea to give to charity, if you can afford it, and giving to charity is an inherent good. (Bleeding Heart Libertarian, Classical Liberal)
    C) “Equality of Opportunity” is the only legally or politically proper concern of the government. Uncoerced giving to charity is acceptable, but not an inherent good. (Libertarian, Objectivist)
(My answers would be “B” and “C” prior, as they aren’t mutually-exclusive).

    5) Drones…

    A) Are pretty handy for blowing up terrorists. Terrorists go boom. (In a libertarian society, sure. In an authoritarian society, this is a terrible idea. Since we’re now more authoritarian than libertarian, it’s a terrible idea. Then again, those not in the robotics arms race will likely be conquered and enslaved.)
    B) Demonstrate how our freedoms are being compromised by leaders with no checks on their power. You could be next. (This is the most true option.)

    C) Seem like a useful tool for surveillance and precision strikes, but we need to carefully introduce legislation to ensure that these technologies aren’t abused in the future. (Delusional solution. Without restoring our democratic processes, and the supremacy of proper jury trials, we’re utterly screwed, and there is no solution except possibly restoration of freedom by benevolent artilects being convinced that human decentralization of power, and “equality under the law” is optimal.)

    6) Firearms…
    A) Are frickin’ awesome. Especially full automatic and high calibers, y’know?
…A dramatic oversimplification, a mindless caricature of the proper view.
(Only an abject idiot can hold this opinion. Such people are not even “in the debate.” They are completely ignorant of history, as well. See: http://www.secondamendmentdocumentary.com )
    C) Can be dangerous, but due to the 2nd Amendment, we shouldn’t regulate them AT ALL, NOR ARE WE ALLOWED TO REGULATE THEM AT ALL, BY THE SECOND AMENDMENT.
Fuck! This political quiz was written by someone who understands the ideas of the Singularity? Seemingly not!
Read “Unintended Consequences” and watch the prior documentary. Then, visit http://www.hawaii.edu/powerkills and study up. Thanks.

    7) Immigration…
    A) Contributes valuable diversity and human capital to our country. Everyone has the right to be here. The right to choose where you live is a fundamental human right.

    8) Marijuana…
    B) I’m alright with it, but don’t usually smoke.
Legalize it, and stop putting innocent people in cages. Politics isn’t that hard to understand if you comprehend the basis for legitimate law. “Mala prohibita” should not exist in a free country, and would not exist, if there were proper jury trials. Restoring proper jury trials should be the number one priority. If you don’t get this, maybe this will help:

Also, please buy the books linked at my blog. Thanks.

    9) Gays…
    A) Deserve the same rights as everyone else, including the right to marry and to adopt.
    C) Why does the government have the authority to grant marriage licenses, again?
A and C are both correct. So long as the government is involved in the marriage racket, gays should be granted a marriage license, just like people in gun-restricted states should be granted “shall issue” permits, with no questions asked. The fewer “infringements,” the better.

    10) The death penalty…

    A) Should be banned until artilects and fully informed juries are in charge. I believe Bittaker and Norris, and people like them deserved to die, but until the state gets better and more consistent at comprehending who should die (among them, most politicians), the state shouldn’t execute anyone. The state executes poor blacks for lesser crimes than it would have executed white people, and varying States have different and grossly-inconsistent standards. The current situation is what you’d expect from sociopathic governance.

    11) “Human biodiversity”…
    C) Is a fact. Different ethnicities have different relative qualities, and varying averages make an aggregate difference.
“C” comes the closest to reality, …but I do not think the term means what you think it means. You’re leaving a lot out of the definition, due to space constraints. This is unfortunate, because your options seem almost racist, and many people are used to “assuming the worst” when they hear “almost racist” things, because racism has been driven underground by Civil Rights legislation, and social stigma. The existence of the other questions raising the issue of possible racism also provide the illusion that “C” represents an opposing viewpoint (ie: If the other options are anti-racist, then “C” must be racist.).

    12) Evolutionary psychology…
    B) Makes some good points, but there’s a lot more to people than evpsych just-so stories. Look deeper.
    C) Determines the primary contours of our psychology, and the rest of just icing on the cake.
    D) More research is needed before we can say anything conclusive.
All of the prior are somewhat true, to varying degrees. Evolutionary psychology is a soft science, that can be made harder with greater processing power and investigative resources. Eric Dondero currently claims his racism is well-founded based on Ev Psych. Ev Psych contains a lot of bunk “research” with flawed statistical methods and approaches, but Evolution explains a lot of human psychology, much of which can be studied, by some of the more rigorous researchers. Also, as processing power gets better, and more subjects can be tracked and studied, or interacted with in the field, the information in this field is likely to get vastly better.

All of the above are true. Why aren’t you smart enough to differentiate between “false authority” (coercive authority) and merit-based authority. Clearly, Joe Biden isn’t smart enough to put an asteroid miner into space, but he is capable of making a law coercing others into doing so. His false authority would not yield good results, because it would be divorced from: (a) first-hand subject knowledge, skills, and abilities (b) the responsibility for possible failure, and the possibility of losing future funding due to failure (c) economic incentive (d) the fast-feedback inherent in voluntary market decisions, and the ability to respond to that feedback in market-time (as opposed to political time). Failure to differentiate between coercive solutions and voluntary solutions is central to the failure to comprehend “authority.” Hierarchy is a different, but similar matter. Guerrilla warfare is sometimes called for, and most effective amongst an educated, leaderless citizenry that is united by a common (set of) incentive(s). A corporation usually requires hierarchy, unless the specialized knowledge and focus of a core team operates around a shared objective and the people are all of a similar type. The larger an organization is, the more it requires a voluntary, and emergent hierarchy, based on voluntary agreements and acted out incentives.

    14) IQ…
    C) Exists, and makes a huge difference in all areas of life.
Someone who is smarter will generally do better on an IQ test. Then again, this is not always so, because most IQ tests are flawed. That said, if you can score perfectly on an IQ test, you must be smarter than someone who can’t get one question correct. It’s not perfect, but it’s OK.

    15) Government…
    A) Should stay out of society’s business. Freedom is the most important.
(This is an oversimplification, of course. Moreover, like most “political tests” you didn’t differentiate between “Classical liberal,” “Libertarian,” “Agorist,” “An-Cap,” “Voluntaryist,” “Communist,” “Socialist,” “Libertine,” Etc. As such, you cover less ground with a “Singularity-informed” political test, than other existing tests online. I know you might not have had much time, but it’s really something that should be done. If the choices in this test are all the better you can do, and not just a lark, then you should pay someone like Eliezer, or Kurzweil, or myself to do it. If you pay me to do it, I’ll stop cussing. If you pay Eliezer to do it, he’ll probably take longer, but the end result will be fairly good, even if it doesn’t address all the prior niche political philosophies.)

In spite of my negative comments, I’m glad you did this. My negative comments were meant as constructive-but-suitably-emotional criticism designed to place emphasis on certain answers. Generally, I think you hit some subjects well, and totally missed on others. Hey, nobody’s perfect.

    PEACE BE WITH YOU, FRIEND.

What positions you think are reasonable is fairly obvious from the word choice, is that deliberate?

    • It’s not obvious what I think is reasonable. I can conceal that, easily.

For instance, I was amused that the libertarian crusader who commented above thinks he has me all figured out.

    1) A
    2) E: It’s the responsibility of any currency-issuing entity to manage the ammount it issues to stabalize aggregate demand for whoever uses that curreny as a unit of account. But bailing out banks just leads to more bad bbehavior, and Interest On Reserves looks like outright bank welfare. Account insurance I’m not sure of. Mostly I agree with Scott Sumner.
    3) B: It works, but mostly not for the reasons people think, see The Myth of the Rational Voter. I think there could be better systems but I’m not convinced by any in particular, and am terrified of the dangers in any transition.
    4) B: There’s something to be said for the utilitarian benefits of redistributing wealth, but I don’t see anything wrong with wealth inequality per se. If I had a button that would double the wealth of the top 1% I’d press it.

    6) A: I worry that outlawing firearms will move murderers to use more effective but less viscerally satisfying means, like explosives. This is a very low priorty issue for me, though.
    7) A: By contrast, this is the political issue I care most about.
    8) B: It seems a lot less bad than alcohol, but it gave me horrible vertigo when I tried it.
    9) A: I don’t place a high priorty on fighting over the word “marriage” if gay people get civil unions.
    10) B: It’s complicated. Punishment is in some sense barbaric by it’s nature, but I don’t see any way around it. But you can’t reverse a death penalty if new evidence comes to light.
    11) A
    12) B Crucial to understanding who human nature comes about, but there’s a lot more to people than their natures. It’s a valid and neccesary academic specialty, but most evolutionary psych that makes it into the popular media is baseless just-so stories.
    13) B I think it is usually overdone, but is sometimes good.
    14) C It’s one of the least fair things in the world.
    15) B I’m basically a neo-liberal. Protect people from catastrophy, but don’t think that messing with the economy will make it work better.

    1) B – The military’s job is to break things. If you don’t like this, be prepared to live at the pleasure of those who do. Our military’s credible threat is based on funding, and commitment.

    2) D – The government is far too involved in decisions at all levels now. Get it out of that role, and let civil society control it’s own course.

    3) F – Reestablish the limits on government set out in the constitution. We’re a constitutional republic, with limited powers granted to government. Government has too much power, and it needs to be pared back.

    4) B – Equality of opportunity is all that anyone should ask for. It’s not anyone’s job to take from one, and give to another; it’s thievery, masked as beneficence.

    5) C

    6) E – Unarmed citizens are called slaves. Revisit the history of gun confiscation, and you will see millions killed after they were first disarmed. Believing that “It can’t happen here,” is ignoring the reality that we’re governed by humans.

    7) E – Is a good thing, but not while welfare magnets continue to draw in those who simply want to live on the dole.

    8) F – Control of one’s self, and what you ingest, should not concern the government. However, you need to live with the consequences of your use.

    9) C – Get the government out of the marriage business. It’s not their job to control who, or can not, get married. It’s just one more issue that people fight over via government.

Kudos to anyone who answers F for the first answer and doesn’t have access to anything classified. Yeah, I get this is about one’s “views” not whether they are justified, but tell me how in the world can you even begin to pretend you can rationally assess how big the military ought properly to be while knowing you are ignorant of the scope and scale of the security challenges facing the nation?

Wanting to feel like you should be able to have a valid opinion is different from the humility to admit you can’t have one. Be angry at your exclusion from the capacity of assessment, but not at the “appropriate size” of the military. At any rate, by the end of FY13, .
