The Singularity Institute for Artificial
Intelligence (SIAI) is a nonprofit corporation dedicated solely
to the technological creation of real AI. Unencumbered by the incrementalist
approach to AI of most business and academia, SIAI is devoted to
furthering both discussion and research in AI and the domain knowledge
required to implement it. Operating since 2000. |

From their site: "Advanced nanotechnology
can build machines that are thousands of times more powerfuland
hundreds of times cheaperthan today's devices. The humanitarian
potential is enormous; so is the potential for misuse. The vision
of CRN is a world in which nanotechnology is widely used for productive
and beneficial purposes, and where malicious uses are limited by effective
administration of the technology." |

The Lifeboat Foundation is the world's
only comprehensive effort to mitigate existential risk, that is, potential
disasters which could wipe out all of humanity. Up until recently,
the only main existential risk was nuclear war, but others are emerging.
Lifeboat is dedicated to confronting them. |

Another, newer transhumanist organization.
Differs in flavor from ExI, although there is significant membership
overlap. Also worth checking out if you care about transhumanism.
With chapters all over the world, WTA's purpose is to serve as an
umbrella organization for transhumanists. The WTA also holds an annual
conference in a different spot each year. |

ImmInst is another umbrella organization
- the first of its kind - created to help its members succeed in working
towards the possibility of radical life extension and potentially
indefinite lifespans. Methods discussed include germline therapy,
medical nanotechnology, cryonics, and others. ImmInst recently had
its first conference in November 2005, has released a book, and will
be releasing a documentary shortly. |

"ASF explores the accelerating
development of special domains in science and technology, and examines
their impact on business and society. In particular, we consider longstanding
accelerating scientific and technological trends in computation, communication,
storage, digitization, simulation, sensing, energy density, energy
efficiency, miniaturization, autonomy, and others, and the way these
developmental trends interact with business and social agendas. We
seek to use this knowledge in service of greater personal, executive,
and professional development." |
