Anders Sandberg
James Martin research fellow, Future of Humanities Institute, Oxford
Anders Sandberg is a Swedish neuroscientist and futurist. He holds a Ph.D. in computational neuroscience from Stockholm University and has studied computer models of human memory at the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm, Sweden. His research at the Oxford Future of Humanity Institute, where he serves as James Martin Research Fellow, centers on societal and ethical issues surrounding human enhancement and new technology, as well as estimating the capabilities and underlying science of future technologies.
In Dr. Sandberg's talk at the July 2007 Institute for Ethics and Emerging Technologies event called "Securing the Longevity Dividend," he gave a talk called "Policy Scenarios for the Longevity Dividend". His presentation at Transvision 2007 was called "Towards a Roadmap of Whole Brain Emulation" and subtitled, "Why Philosophers Actually Care About Microscope Jitter." In 2008, he participated in two conferences on the topic of Global Catastrophic Risks taking place in Oxord in the UK and Mountain View, California in the US. He recently participated in publishing the Whole Brain Emulation Roadmap with members of the Future of Humanity Insitute.
His topics of particular interest include enhancement of cognition, cognitive biases, technology-enabled collective intelligence, neuroethics and public policy. He has worked on this within the EU project ENHANCE, where he also was responsible for public outreach and online presence. Besides scientific publications in neuroscience, ethics and future studies he has also participated in the public debate about human enhancement internationally. He has also been scientific producer for the neuroscience exhibition "Se Hjarnan!" ("Behold the Brain!"), organized by Swedish Traveling Exhibitions, the Swedish Research Council and the Knowledge Foundation. Between 1996 and 2000 he was chairman of the Swedish Transhumanist Association and is the co-founder of the think tank Eudoxa.
