Ben Goertzel

CSO, Novamente & Director of Research, SIAI

Ben Goertzel is the chief science officer of Novamente LLC, a software products and services firm focused on artificial intelligence applications in the domain of natural language question-answering and creating intelligent agents for virtual worlds and massively multi-player online games. He also serves as the Director of Research at the Singularity Institute for Artificial Intelligence.

He has spoken on the subject of life extension, artificial general intelligence, and the Singularity at conferences and lectures. At the Immortality Institute Life Extension Conference held in 1995, he presented a lecture entitled "Artificial Intelligence and Human Immortality". He participated in a panel discussion titled "What are the bottlenecks, and how soon to Artificial General Intelligence?" and the panel debate "AGI - What are the Risks?" He spoke on the topic of the technological singularity hypothesis in an online presentation entitled "Ten Years to the Singularity (If we Really, Really Try). He was invited to give a Google Tech Talk, called "Artificial General Intelligence: Now is the Time", at the company's headquarters on May 30th. At Transvision 2007's July 25 session, entitled "Metaspace: Transforming Humanity," he gave a presentation called "Artificial General Intelligence in Virtual Worlds." There and at the 2007 Singularity Summit, he described Novamente's research in developing artificial intelligence agents displaying general intelligence in virtual environments like Second Life and massively multiplayer online games.

In March of 2008, he served as organizing committee member for AGI-08: The First Conference on Artificial General Intelligence, presenting “AI and AGI: Past, Present and Future” at the University of Memphis. Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) research focuses on the original and ultimate goal of AI–to create intelligence as a whole, by exploring all available paths, including theoretical and experimental computer science, cognitive science, neuroscience, and innovative interdisciplinary methodologies. He is currently organizing AGI-09: The Second Conference on Artificial General Intelligence, scheduled to take place March 6-9 in Arlington, Virginia. He will also be launching the first AGI Summer School in Xiamen, China in June of 2009.

Dr. Goertzel received his Ph.D. in mathematics from Temple University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He has held university positions in mathematics, computer science, and psychology in the United States, New Zealand, and Australia. He has published over seventy texts on cognitive science and artificial intelligence, including Chaotic Logic, Creating Internet Intelligence, Artificial General Intelligence (edited with Cassio Pennachin), and The Hidden Pattern.
