A Brief History
of the Technological Singularity
1932:
Science
fiction author John W. Campbell writes The Last Evolution, a
story featuring self-improving AI.
1948: Computing pioneer John von Neumann defends strong AI and
speculates about the possibility of a Singularity.
1965: Computer scientist I. J. Good publishes "Speculations
Concerning the First Ultraintelligent Machine".
1993: Mathematician Vernor Vinge publishes "The
Coming Technological Singularity".
1996: Transhumanist Eliezer Yudkowsky publishes "Staring
Into the Singularity".
2000: The Singularitarian
Principles, a document outlining Singularitarian values and goals,
is published.
2000: The Singularity Institute
for Artificial Intelligence (SIAI) is founded for implementing the
Singularity.
2001: The first serious theoretical study of AI morality, "Creating
Friendly AI", is published.
2001: Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates argues that AI will eventually
be
possible, heavily transforming our society.
2003: SIAI publishes an early version of their AI theory, "Levels
of Organization in General Intelligence".
2003: The first conference
devoted to discussion of the Singularity is held at Stanford University.
2004: The Singularity Institute publishes a thorough
update to their theory of AI morality.
2004: The Singularity Institute expands,
acquiring two new full-time staff and a new research associate.
