From the SL4 Lexicon:

Goal System:

An algorithm that tries to achieve and model goals, either in fictitious scenarios abstracted from spoon-fed data, (as in The Matrix, or young AI training simulations) internal mindspace, (if the Goal System's only feedback is information from its own brain, as in an algorithm that does nothing but process its past output) or externally observable reality. At the head of a Goal System sits a supergoal or supergoals. If no explicit supergoals exist, then low-level goals such as pattern recognition might become de facto supergoals. Humans have a Goal System, with goals designed by biological evolution. Our evolution-given supergoal is to reproduce as effectively as possible. Recreational sex with the use of effective birth control is an example of a human subgoal's stomping evolution's supergoal.
